I got this first impression of Portland from an anonymous reader and thought I’d share it with the rest of y’all:
I just witnessed a theft today, on SW 2nd near Yamhill. First I heard angry shouting, then I saw a vibrant yoot carrying an electronic device sprinting away, followed by an angry White guy who wasn’t running as fast. The latter jogged to a halt, shouted something angry, and walked away. The former kept running south on SW 2nd.So far, my experience back in Portland seems to be a dreamlike parody of Portland. I had a couple of hipsters talk about how cute my son is with all sort of hip slang, saw a bunch of homeless people, saw a bunch of skinny jeans, saw someone who appeared to be filling out paperwork to get an ice cream cone at Ben & Jerry’s.I had dinner at Rock Bottom with a young man who has recently gotten most of his teeth replaced after they were knocked out by the feet of some vibrant youths who were economically motivated / angry about slavery / had been called the N-word / whatever. His mother seemed really mad … that Fox News exists.I know Portland is a safe city, but I just get this sense that I’m surrounded by Eloi who are going to get eaten by cannibals one of these days. How are you? You keeping safe? You worried about all those “Neo-Nazis”? I found one under my ottoman the other day. Must have been uncomfortable for the little guy … all scrunched up in his black lederhosen.
Thanks anonymous reader!
